Cry Baby by Melanie Martinez free essay sample

Whimsical laughter echoes throughout the room as Melanie Martinez’s album Cry Baby playsat full volume. Amongst the symphony of sounds are the dripping of water, the popping of bubbles, the tinkling of bells, and the stunning high notes of Martinez’s honey-coated voice.Your eyes flutter then close, enticed by the music into a tranquil slumber. Visions of an enigmatic, eccentric wonderland flash behind your eyelids. Within this curious land are March hares and mad hatters, colorful carousels spinning around and alphabet building blocks scattered and strewn about. Swirling amidst this serene dream are hues of an underlying, lurking, twisted darkness with thundering notes that manage to conceal themselves. A horrifying thunderstorm of wickedness carries on throughout, cloaked by the innocence of a baby blue sky and cotton candy clouds. As you arrive at the end of the dream you are struck by a bolt of black lightning, transferring chilled, rippling sensations of cold-bloode d grimness to your previously thumping, compassionate heart. Potato Head tell me, is it true that pain is beauty? Does a new face come with a warranty? Will a pretty face make it better?† The powerful lyricism brings to light serious issues and contrasts with the innocence of childhood. â€Å"Cry Baby† also boasts infectious, creatively relevant melodies. Between the eerie circus music accompanying â€Å"Carousel,† the bubbly beat-drop in â€Å"Soap,† and the kindergarten-style xylophone in â€Å"Alphabet Boy,† the instruments fit seamlessly into the chapters of Cry Baby’s story. Martinez’s atmospheric vocals only elevate these already fantastic jams. Although â€Å"Cry Baby† has its weak moments, like â€Å"Training Wheels† and â€Å"Pacify Her,† two tracks that fall short of the excellent craft Martinez displays on the rest of the album, it ultimately comes through with angsty anthems like â€Å"Dollhouse† and â€Å"Pity Party.† â€Å"Cry Baby† is a promising debut, and while it may not be for toddlers, it’s the perfect bedtime lullaby for anyone willing to enter Martinez’s beautifully broken world.
